About the Exhibition:
Flight explores the idea of movement through physical, emotional, and imagined spaces. The works in this exhibition consider flight as quiet motion and gathering—crows assembling, murmurings in the sky—as well as moments when flight is suspended, stilled, or transformed through absence and loss. Across the exhibition, flight is understood as imagination and escape, determination and purpose, integrity and history, and as a response to both personal and global conditions, including migration, displacement, environmental crisis, feminism, and apocalypse. Images of wings and sky sit alongside reflections on wandering, spiritual release, fight or flight, and the desire to transcend limitation. Through paintings, sculpture, photography, textiles, printmaking, drawing, sound-based installation, and video, Flight invites intimate, poetic, and expansive interpretations of what it means to lift off, to flee, to endure, and to imagine otherwise.
About the Organization:
The Organization of Kingston Women Artists (OKWA) is a non-profit, independent association formed in Kingston, Ontario in 1989, with a current membership of approximately sixty professional women artists. The organization provides a forum for mutual support, exchange of information, and creative dialogue among local artists working in a wide range of media, from painting and printmaking to ceramics, photography, and mixed media. OKWA’s members are individually active in creating, teaching, lecturing, and exhibiting both locally and beyond.
OKWA presents two major exhibitions each year — one in the Spring and one in the Fall — that showcase the breadth and diversity of its membership and invite engagement with contemporary themes and artistic practices. These exhibitions, along with monthly artist talks and other public events, serve to increase awareness and appreciation of women’s visual art in the community. The organization also supports emerging talent through bursaries and provides opportunities for artistic growth, connection, and professional exchange among its members and the broader public.
