Artist Bio
Patti Groome is an abstract/non-objective artist who relies on both the intuitive and analytic sides of her personality to explore her aesthetic. She primarily works with acrylics and uses non-traditional tools in an additive-subtractive, multi-layered process. She has a BFA and worked as a graphic artist before obtaining her PhD in Epidemiology and becoming a tenured professor at Queen's University. Patti has been joyfully devoting her energy to her art practice since she retired from Queen’s in 2021.
Artist Statement
I make abstract paintings on wood panels or canvas using acrylic paint and other media in an addition-subtraction-addition process. I especially enjoy creating multi-layered, textured images that the viewer can explore. I use my intuition to express my inner energy and disposition. My paintings depict my mind’s world. And that world sometimes inhabits imaginary space.
I start with a playful approach and work in a call and response manner. Sometimes the marks and colour choices are informed by thoughts or feelings I can identify in the moment, but more often meaning is later revealed. At some point, aesthetic concerns dominate and I move back and forth between intuition and analysis until the work feels resolved.
