Artist Bio
Helen Baker is a Canadian abstract painter living in Kingston. Her works have been described as eclectic and enigmatic, combining innovative lines and rich colors. Working in the medium of acrylic paint, her art captures the unseen around us.
Helen’s inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere, whether it be stained-glass windows, star-bathed skies, or crystal clear lakes. She is most at home in the water, and translates the feeling of calming waves into her unique works. Deriving influence from post-impressionists like Vincent van Gogh, Helen often manipulates colors to create a sense of atmosphere beyond reality.
Above all, Helen is moved to incite hope.
Artist Statement
“My work aims to explore the relationship between depression and intuition. Having suffered from depression my whole life, the world can appear gray and dull to me. In order to contrast this emptiness, I experiment with a kaleidoscope of colors.
I create all my pieces in a meditative state, bringing to the canvas buried images from my dreams.
I draw inspiration from a wide variety of art movements: postimpressionism, surrealism, symbolism, and geometric abstraction. I am also influenced by the effect of light shining through stained glass.
My goal is to inspire hope, so I donate a portion of the proceeds from my art sales to various local mental health services.”
