Library Spaces and Group Study Rooms
All Library study spaces, computers, printing/scanning, and group study rooms are open to SLC students only starting September 8, 2021. The Library remains closed to community visitors until further notice. Visit the Library website for complete details and operating hours.
Online Chat and Texting
The Library team is available virtually to assist you through online chat or texting service.
Online chat: No login is required for the online chat and this service allows for link-sharing.

E-appointments using Teams
Students may book an appointment with a Library Technician for help with research-based assignments using Teams which allows for video, chat, and screen-sharing.
The Library provides 24/7 online access to all SLC students and employees. Log in with your SLC credentials through slc.me Student Portal. Access more than one million items including:
- eBooks and Audio Books
- Digital Magazines and 10,000+ online International newspapers
- Online streaming video including new movie releases
- Online peer-reviewed research articles, journals, and databases
- Borrowing Services
The Library’s physical collections are available for browsing and borrowing. This service is open to SLC students, faculty, and employees only.
Your student photo ID card is also your Library card, as well as your photocopying card.
- Part-time students may obtain a library card free of charge for the duration of their course, with proof of registration
- Graduates with an alumni card may borrow free for the first year after graduation and for $10/year after
- Community residents may purchase a library card for $15/year
- Queen's University and RMC students may purchase a library card for $10/year
You must have your card with you in order to borrow materials. You may renew an item over the phone if the item is not already overdue and your record is in good standing. Book return slots are available for returning materials when libraries are closed.
Active accounts must be renewed annually in person to verify account information.
We do charge fines. If an item from the General Collection is not returned on time, the fine is $0.25 per day per item. The maximum fine is the cost of the book. Higher fines may apply to special collections such as the Reserve Collection.
Materials are shelved according to the Library of Congress call number system. Use the SLC library catalogue to find specific materials, and ask the library staff for any assistance you might need. Most books in the libraries may be borrowed for three weeks, while most DVDs & CDs circulate for one week.
- Reference Collections — These collections of encyclopedias, dictionaries, directories, indexes, almanacs, etc. provide quick factual information and background information. These materials are for use in the library only.
- Reserve Collections — These collections may contain current textbooks, and other books or articles that teachers have assigned as reading. Some material is for use in the library only. Some items, such as accounting solutions manuals, may be on a one-hour loan. At the Kingston campus, most material may be borrowed overnight, from an hour before the library closes, and must be returned before 9:00a.m. on the following open day.
- Periodicals Collections — The latest issues of current magazine, journal, and newspaper subscriptions are displayed on the journal shelves in each library. Older issues are kept behind the circulation desk and are signed out from there for use in the libraries only.
- Electronic Resources — The libraries make available many internet-accessible databases that provide the full text of periodical articles and books. For information on the database services to which the libraries subscribe, see the Library Home page.
The three campus libraries all provide tables for group work, study carrels in quiet areas for individual work and bookable group study rooms. In addition, you will find computers providing access to the Internet as well as to local databases, laser printers, DVD players, VCRs, and photocopiers.
Experienced library staff at the reference/information desks are ready to help you to find information you need, and help you use the various print and electronic resources within the library. Please don't hesitate to ask for help!
If an item you want is not available in your campus library, we may be able to obtain a copy for you, either from one of the other campus libraries, or from an outside library. Please talk to one of the library staff if you would like to use this service, and allow at least 2 weeks for delivery. There is no fee for borrowing books or a/v materials from other Ontario Colleges, but there may be a charge to borrow from outside the college system. The borrower will be responsible for any fees or fines charged by the lending institution.
