Patricia Van Asperen

Artist Bio

I have been working as an artist since I was tossed out of band in grade 8 and put into an art class for the musically challenged.  I trained as a fine artist and then as a graphic designer.  Carving has become my primary passion and I have been working mainly in paper fibre clay for the last 18 years.  I specialize in making light weight wall pieces, that have figurative elements.

Artist Statement

I always seek to create a sense of peace in the face of the unpredictability of the world and its effects on the psychology of being human.   Through sculpture,  I try to come to terms with the temporary nature of living.  There are too few moments that allow us to appreciate the complexity and beauty we exist within and fewer ways to cling to our time here.  In my work, I am always trying to find a sense of continuity, for the temporality of our fleeting thoughts, and continual changes that the passage of time demands of our lives, within the static but grounding nature of sculpture.
