Artist Bio
After ceramics training in Yorkshire England, Sue spent many years working as a professional functional potter largely defined by using the wheel. Moving to Kingston in 1990, she joined the Potters’ Guild and became President in 1993. As a member and past President of OKWA she felt encouraged to exhibit more sculptural pieces. Her latest work experiments in creating unusual handbuilt clay vessels as a background for displaying carved images. The first of this body of work was accepted into an Ontario-wide juried FUSION exhibition early in 2025 and was exhibited in Toronto, Kingston and Dundas.
Artist Statement
When I began learning about clay and pottery I started with varied hand building methods before progressing to efficiency on the wheel. Working on the anciently discovered potter's wheel I have produced many beautiful vessels of varied shapes and sizes but unless altered they were symmetrical and rounded. Returning to the off-wheel creations by taking a slab of clay and choosing a shape to outline a non-symmetrical creature gave me a different challenging experience and result. This has been the basis of my most recent body of work.
