Artist Statement
My work explores the intersection of abstraction and landscape within the context of Canadian contemporary painting. Through the use of oil and acrylic mediums, I aim to capture the essence of place—its rhythm, energy, and atmosphere—rather than its literal form. Colour and gesture serve as primary vehicles of expression, allowing intuition and emotion to guide the creative process.
Having grown up in an area rich with both ancient and contemporary Indigenous art, I have long been influenced by the visual languages that honour connection to the land and cultural resilience. Artists such as Emily Carr, who sought to preserve and reflect the spirit of place and people through pictorial representation, continue to inspire my own practice.
Each composition emerges through a balance of structure and spontaneity. Layers of paint are built, altered, and redefined, reflecting the natural forces—and human histories—that shape the landscapes I reference. Through abstraction, I aim to evoke a sense of continuity between people and the land, expressing both their strength and interdependence.
Ultimately, my paintings seek to translate the sensory and emotional experience of landscape into a visual language that invites reflection on continuity, connection, and the living spirit of mother earth.
