Artist Bio
I have been working with ceramics for decades after a career in animation. I have studied the human form with drawings and sculpture for a long time. More recently my work has evolved into abstract forms which still express qualities of human gesture and emotion.
Artist Statement
The clay sculptures were inspired after years of sketching dancers, and my background in animation. Repeated movements and turns of direction are choreographed in clay.
I layer thin rectangular slabs of clay guiding them into various directions, layering with wet clay slip and glazes. As the form dries enough to be stable, I roll it and continue to build until the structure becomes too fragile to add weight.
Each form has a number of extensions reaching out like fabric or foliage. It can be turned several ways to stand on different arms. At every turn they seem to be trying to lift off of the surface.
