Community Art Gallery
The Marianne van Silfhout Gallery is a state-of-the-art community art gallery located at the front atrium of the Brockville campus and is the focus of the visual arts for Brockville and the surrounding region.
Creation of the gallery was made possible by a major half-million dollar bequest from the estate of Marianne van Silfhout, a graduate of the Fine Art program at St. Lawrence College, as well as numerous donors to the St. Lawrence College Alumni & Development Office. Behind this gift is Marianne’s belief that wilderness adventure, education, and art are inextricably bound together in an experience of enduring value and benefit to humanity. The bequest also funds bursaries for both part-time and full-time Fine Arts students at St. Lawrence College.

About the Exhibition:
Kayak, Listening to Water, is a solo exhibition by acclaimed Canadian printmaker Otis Tamasauskas. This thought-provoking exhibition explores water’s fragility, complexity, and immense power through layered printmaking, collage, and installation.
In Kayak, Listening to Water, Tamasauskas reflects on humanity’s relationship with water—its capacity to sustain and destroy, to cleanse and overwhelm. The works merge poetic imagery with environmental commentary, inviting viewers to consider water not only as a natural force but as a living, legal, and spiritual entity. Central to the exhibition is The Great Lake Project, a ten-foot-wide installation inspired by the environmental case against Shell Oil in Ecuador, where a river was recognized as a “living entity” under law.
“Kayak” becomes both vessel and metaphor: a symbol of balance, buoyancy, and the human struggle to navigate shifting environmental realities. Tamasauskas’s innovative use of printmaking materials and techniques—often incorporating multiple processes and even the printing plate itself into his compositions—creates a rich visual language of movement, transparency, and depth.
