On-Campus Academic English Programs are suspended for Spring 2021 and Fall 2021
The College provides two on-campus Academic English programs with a total of four levels and you can start at any level based on your proficiency. The programs offer an enriching English experience with authentic readings, audio and video segments, activities and exercises designed to build vocabulary, text comprehension and pronunciation. There will also be opportunities to learn about Canadian culture and the local area through meaningful experiences in the community, including field trips to various historical and cultural sites.
Our supportive faculty, state-of-the-art classrooms, and multimedia centres are fully equipped to help you as a non-native speaker of English to practice and improve your English skills in class and online. You will be in small classes with highly experienced teachers and learning with students from all around the world.
- Level 1: Pre- Intermediate
- Level 2: Intermediate
Successful completion of level 1 and level 2 allows you to take the General Arts & Science English for Academic Purposes (GAS-EAP) program.
- Level 3: Advanced
If you complete the first three levels, you will also receive a Statement of Achievement. You will be able to apply to one of our certificates or diploma programs if you achieve an overall grade of 70%.
- Level 4: Advanced Plus
Successful completion of level 3 and level 4 will meet the requirements to get into academic programs at St. Lawrence College and you will earn an Ontario College Certificate. With an overall grade of 70% or higher you will be eligible to apply for a degree or a graduate certificate program. With an overall grade of 60% you will be eligible to apply for a certificate program or a diploma program.
ESL Pre-Academic (ESL): This program includes Level 1 Pre-Intermediate and Level 2 Intermediate. The purpose of this program is to provide students who speak English as a second language with instruction and support that will enable them to improve their English language skills to succeed in their academic studies. There will also be opportunities to learn about Canadian culture and the local area through meaningful experiences in the community, including field trips to various historical and cultural sites.
General Arts and Science English for Academic Purposes (GAS-EAP): This program includes Level 3 Advanced and Level 4 Advanced Plus. Successful completion of English for Academic Purposes Levels 3 and Level 4 will meet the requirements to get into most programs at St. Lawrence College, and you will earn an Ontario College Certificate. This program is designed for ESL students who wish to achieve high proficiency in English in order to pursue a career or study in an English-speaking environment. At the advanced level, English is taught in an integrated manner with academic subjects to accelerate learning. The program also emphasizes knowledge of Canadian culture and society and the awareness of global issues.
