SLC Students Own The Podium with Gold Medal Win at National Case Challenge

A team of marketing students from St. Lawrence College was victorious in a prestigious national case competition last weekend in Montreal, beating 32 other teams from colleges across Canada.

Winning students are Alisha Ferguson (3rd year Business Administration Marketing), Jason Lancaster (3rd year Business Administration Marketing) and Hollie Knapp-Fisher (3rd year Advertising and Marketing Communications). This victory comes on the heels of a gold medal win for these same students
at the recent Ontario College Marketing Competition (OCMC).

The ninth annual Vanier College BDC Case challenge was held February 7 – 9. There were three divisions of eleven colleges competing on the first day. The top two teams in each division advanced to the final round. In both rounds the teams were given three hours to analyze a business problem, create a PowerPoint presentation, and present a realistic marketing plan to a panel of experts from business, industry and education.

Teams were judged on the practicality of their plans and the quality of their presentations. In a tension packed room that included many of the participants that did not advance to the finals, the St. Lawrence team delivered their final case analysis, recommendations and marketing plan in a confident, convincing and professional manner. They were challenged hard by the judges in the question and answer session, but stood their ground and defended their recommendations effectively.

Kip Tuckwell, coach of the team was extremely proud of the team’s performance. “The poise and confidence they demonstrated was truly impressive. The judges recognized how capable they were of applying marketing concepts in a real world situation.” One judge clearly pointed out that their ability to handle tough questions differentiated the St. Lawrence team from their competitors.

Sheridan College of Oakville, Ontario placed second and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) finished in third place. St. Lawrence students have excelled in this competition in the past. Over the past five years St. Lawrence teams have placed first overall twice and second overall twice. No other college comes close to that record.

The competition is organized by Vanier College and sponsored by the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) and Scotiabank.
