St. Lawrence College President and CEO to join Pre-Service Firefighter students for ice water rescue

2014-01-10, 2:05 PM

BROCKVILLE – St. Lawrence College President and CEO Glenn Vollebregt and Senior Vice President, Advancement, Student & External Affairs Gordon MacDougall will participate alongside Pre-Service Firefighter students in ice water rescue at Block House Island on Monday, January 13, 2014.

Glenn has been attending classes as part of his Go-to-Class initiative, where he attends two different classes per month in order to gain valuable insight from a student’s perspective about learning in a variety of programs at St. Lawrence College. In May 2013, Glenn participated in live fire training alongside St. Lawrence College Pre-Service Firefighter Education & Training students at the Loyalist Fire Training Centre.

Prior to the ice water rescue training, Glenn and Gordon had the opportunity to try on the immersion suits and received safety training.

“I had the chance to participate alongside our Pre-Service Firefighter students in live fire training last year, and I was able to experience first-hand the incredible learning opportunities and challenging situations our students encounter during their training,” said Glenn. “I look forward to another positive and rewarding experience alongside the students and faculty of the Pre-Service Firefighter program during ice water rescue.”

31 students from the St. Lawrence College Pre-Service Firefighter Education & Training program will participate in the ice water rescue training over four days in January at Block House Island. Training on the ice and in the water for the first time, students will face a variety of situations, including self-rescue with and without ice picks, victim rescue in the water, and victim rescue using a rescue craft. Students spend time prior to the ice water rescue learning the theory behind the hands-on training, including ice and water conditions, hypothermia, use of immersion suits and rescue craft, victim rescue, and more.

The ice water rescue training is operated in partnership with the Brockville Fire Department and the City of Brockville. Four experienced firefighters and emergency responders from Brockville will be with the students at the ice water rescue training to provide instruction and guidance. There is a 1:1 instructor: student ratio for anyone on the ice and in the water, with an additional instructor ready to perform a rescue if need be.

“As always, our number one priority is the safety of our students, including Glenn and Gordon. Having one instructor for every student during training is not only a safety precaution, but also allows for a valuable learning opportunity for our students,” said Captain Mark Weldon, program coordinator of the Pre-Service Firefighter program at St. Lawrence College.
