St. Lawrence College students bring Hair to the stage

BROCKVILLE, ON - Experience the hippie culture of the 1960s during exciting and daring performances of Hair, presented by the St. Lawrence College Music Theatre – Performance program at the Brockville Arts Centre from April 19 to 21.

Hair, the iconic rock musical, tells the story of the "tribe", a group of politically active, long-haired hippies of the "Age of Aquarius" living a bohemian life in New York City and fighting against conscription into the Vietnam War. Hair features book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot.

"I really admire the courage and commitment that the students have given to a very difficult, physical, emotional and spiritual piece of theatre," said Michael Bianchin, director and Music Theatre – Performance program coordinator. "Hair is about asking ourselves, 'why do we do what we do and where do we go at the end?' It has been a thrill working with such an outstanding creative team. Audiences will love the production and the experience of being at the theatre."

Hair premiered off-Broadway at the Public on October 17, 1967 and ran for a limited engagement of six weeks. After revisions and the addition of 13 songs, Hair opened on Broadway at the Biltmore Theatre on April 29, 1968. After 1,750 performances in four years, Hair closed on July 1, 1972. There have been revivals of Hair all over the world in the past 40 years and it continues to be a popular choice for high school and post-secondary school musical productions due to its theme of pacifism.

There will be four Hair performances at the Brockville Arts Centre:

Thursday, April 19, 2012 at 8:00 pm

Friday, April 20, 2012 at 8:00 pm

Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 2:00 pm

Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 8:00 pm

Ticket prices are $37 for adults and $26.50 for students. Special group rates are available. Please call the Brockville Arts Centre box office at 613-342-7122 for tickets.
