St. Lawrence College students win silver at Vanier College BDC Case Challenge

A team of third year Integrated Marketing Communications students won the silver medal in the annual Vanier College BDC case challenge held February 11 – 13 in Montreal. The competition, hosted by Vanier College, attracts colleges from across Canada. This year 27 colleges entered the competition.

In the competition teams are given three hours to analyze a case and prepare a PowerPoint presentation for a judging panel comprised of marketing professionals and university academics. Teams are judged on the viability of their plans and the quality of their presentation—how confident and convincing they were in presenting and justifying their recommendations and plans.

The St. Lawrence team comprised of Brook Johnston, Debbie Bennett and Brett McDonald first advanced from a nine team division in the preliminary round. There were three divisions of nine teams. The top two teams from each division advanced to the final round. The advancing teams were announced at a gala banquet on Saturday evening.

There was much banter about the composition of the final round contestants—three French-language Quebec Colleges and three Ontario Colleges. On Sunday the judges witnessed six extremely well presented marketing plans. The St. Lawrence students presented their case with confidence and poise. In announcing the winners the judges acknowledged their difficulty in separating the top three colleges. Lionel Groulx won gold, St. Lawrence College Kingston took the silver and Valleyfield College the bronze.

The success of these students is another indication of the quality of student St. Lawrence is producing. "Their unique and innovative solutions to two very difficult case challenges were judged on a strategic and tactical level. Under pressure and in a very competitive environment these students handled the situation with confidence," says faculty advisor, Kip Tuckwell.
