10 Things to do on National Indigenous Peoples Day
National Indigenous Peoples Day takes place on the summer solstice, June 21. It’s a special occasion to learn more about the rich and diverse cultures, voices, experiences and histories of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Learning about Indigenous Peoples, places and experiences is a step forward each Canadian can take on the path to reconciliation. Shannon Hall, Education Developer and Curriculum Consultant of Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being at St. Lawrence College shares ten things you can do on June 21 in recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day.
SLC Continues to Help Students Affected by War in Ukraine
Viktoria Barnes, an SLC professor in Interdisciplinary Studies and Pathways wanted to help students impacted by the war in Ukraine in any way she could. New to SLC and not knowing all its innerworkings, she joined the Ukraine Working Group and started reaching out to community contacts. Through her work, she confirmed that members of the community are raising money through The Mayor’s Fund which is now dedicated as help for all Ukranian Refugees, not just students. As always, anyone wishing to help SLC students specifically can donate to the SLC student emergency fund.
SLC Students Rebrand The Memorial Centre Farmers’ Market
Members of the Spark team conducted industry and market research to understand design requirements before developing a new logo for the Memorial Centre Farmers' Market in Kingston, Ontario.
Learning Connections Conference 2022 Wrap Up
We are pleased to share that we received 529 registrations for our first ever hybrid format LCC event this year as our College community engaged in a series of virtual and onsite learning opportunities during May 30 and 31. Day one (May 30) was full of excitement as staff gathered in virtual rooms to share ideas, learn, and catch up. Day two (May 31) was full of enthusiasm as staff met in person during workshops, over coffee and lunch breaks, and to celebrate our annual SLC College Award winners.
National Indigenous History Month Book Recommendations and Virtual Library Display
Last year, the Indigenous Team shared wisdom and perspective on Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being and how we can each take reconciliACTION, meaningful steps to move reconciliation forward. The answers included many book recommendations, which are compiled here, as well as the books read by the Indigenous Services Book Club.
