The graduating class of the Business Administration – Accounting program in Kingston recently held the seventh annual Accounting Hackathon in collaboration with the national charity, Rise. In this action learning event, student teams worked with an entrepreneur to resolve a financial business issue. Entrepreneurs participating in the event were located across Ontario and work with Rise, the only national charity dedicated to helping people with mental health conditions or addiction achieve financial independence through self-employment or small business ownership. Rise provides resources, mentorship, and micro-financing to eliminate barriers, improve life outcomes, and strengthen communities.

In a collaborative effort to enhance local wildlife habitat, first-year students from SLC's Environmental Technician program recently partnered with the Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA) for a hands-on project at Cooper Marsh, a conservation area in South Lancaster. The students worked alongside RRCA staff to construct and install duck boxes, contributing to ongoing habitat restoration efforts in the area.

In an inspiring display of interdepartmental collaboration, students from three distinct faculties - Esthetics, Media Arts Fundamentals, and Health Care Administration - joined forces this term to create a vibrant community of learning and professional growth.  Our talented Estheticians, engaged in the ESTH 43 – Makeup course, embarked on a journey to master various makeup styles, starting the term with a focus on professional looks. Recognizing an opportunity for cross-departmental synergy, Aba Mortley of the Esthetics department reached out to Jonathan Sugarman of Media Arts Fundamentals, Kellie Daniel and Ekta Singh from Health Care Administration, proposing an innovative collaborative project. 

As part of our ongoing commitment to student success, a cross-college committee has been working to develop SLC’s inaugural college-wide Co-Curricular Record (CCR) program. Co-curricular recognition provides a framework for increasing access to student life activities and it directly supports St. Lawrence College’s student enrichment objectives. By recognizing and encouraging student engagement in opportunities beyond the classroom, the CCR will serve as a tool to help students make meaning of their experiences, reflect on learning outcomes, and articulate their professional skill sets.  

St. Lawrence College hosted the Centre for Innovation on Campus Mental Health's (CICMH) annual Eastern Regional Forum at the College's Kingston Campus on January 31, 2024. Approximately 20 delegates from SLC, other post-secondary institutions, and community organizations from Eastern Ontario were present, including University of Ottawa, Trent Durham Student Association, Loyalist College, Collège la Cité, Pathways to Education, Durham Rape Crisis Centre, Ontario Shores Centre, and Canadian Mental Health Association, Haliburton.
