Overview
A career in office work is challenging, fastpaced, and interesting. In a typical office, you might be required to create/maintain a website, produce flyers, or generate a news letter. You certainly will need to know how to use the Internet for information, travel arrangements, and e-mail processing. Further, you will be expected to manage electronic word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, and desktop publishing. ‘Soft skills’ such as the ability to manage your time, greet visitors properly, and answer the telephone effectively are highly valued by employers and taught in this program.

The role of an office administrator has changed and continues to evolve leading to variety of rewarding careers.
The Office Administration - Health Services Program prepares graduates for current and future office trends. Experienced faculty prepare students to work in dynamic business environments. Students become extremely computer literate through instructional scaffolding. Faculty provide a supportive and professional environment that allows students to build on their current level of knowledge, which leads to mastery of the skills required in a business office.
Students graduate from the program appreciating the value of being an office administrator and become advocates of the profession during their career.

2023-2024
This course introduces students to the principles and concepts of bookkeeping. Students learn a systematic approach toward completion of the accounting cycle for both a service and merchandising operation. Additional topics include internal controls of a petty cash fund, the preparation of a bank reconciliation, month end / year end preparations and entries. Through a case study, students learn all aspects of the accounting cycle from recording the daily transactions for a business through to producing financial statements.
COMM 34 provides instruction and practice in college and workplace communication skills with an emphasis on the development of strategies to organize and express ideas in a clear and professional manner suitable to a variety of audiences. Course work also provides opportunities for the development of writing, grammar, research, citation, analytical, reading, and listening skills.
Office procedure skills are essential to support the daily operations of an office environment. The course introduces students to the use of office technology, electronic record keeping, and web-based tools. Students develop professional conduct skills through the use of emails, business presentations, and personal time management.
Effective use of a spreadsheet program is essential to working in an office environment. This course introduces students to basic spreadsheet operations. In computer labs, students perform general computation tasks using spreadsheet software to produce business documents within established deadlines.
Word processing skills are essential to working in an office environment. This course introduces students to the basics of keyboarding and word processing skills and applications. In computer labs students produce basic business documents in a timed setting.
Entering a new environment presents challenges as we transition to a new set of values and expectations within a new organizational culture. This course is designed to examine the process of adjustment and to equip students with strategies for making successful transitions.
This course is designed to provide students with systematic knowledge and skills in computerized accounting and office administration. Students are taught in a hands-on environment to journalize accounts receivable, accounts payable, sales, inventory and payroll transactions, prepare bank reconciliations and calculate payroll.

Office procedure skills are essential to support the daily operations of an office environment. This course develops previously learned skills acquired in OFAD 2 Office Procedures I particularly office technology and communication. Further skills taught and practiced include minute taking, scheduling, records management, travel, and finance.

Word processing skills are essential to working in an office environment. This course develops intermediate word processing skills and applications building on the skills learned in Introduction to Word Processing. In computer labs students practice producing complex business documents in a timed setting.

Effective management of information is an integral part of working in an office environment. Information can come in a variety of forms. This course introduces students to basic database operations, from designing tables and queries to creating forms and reports. In computer labs, students perform general tasks using database software to produce business documents within established deadlines.
Communication skills, including the appropriate use of social media in a business setting, are essential to working in an office environment. Building on general communication skills learned in the first semester of the office administration programs, students practice producing documents for a business setting including minute-taking. In preparation to seek employment in their field, students learn the essentials of resume writing, cover letters, networking and interviewing.

This course develops advanced word processing skills and applications building on the skills learned in Word Processing - Intermediate Applications. Students develop desktop publishing skills. In computer labs, students practice producing complex business documents in a timed setting.

Medical terminology is essential to working in a health services environment. Students identify and analyze medical terms to understand their meaning and to demonstrate correct use.
Medical dicta transcription, accurate spelling, pronunciation and proficient production of medical reports using transcription equipment and medical transcription software is essential to working in a health services environment. This course introduces students to the do’s and don’ts of medical transcription and the application of correct medical report formatting and correct use of medical terminology in a timed setting.

Every health services environment is a business office and requires clear-cut and easy-to-follow routines for its smooth and effective operation. The health services office revolves around patients and health care professionals. Students learn how to handle incoming and outgoing mail, schedule appointments, respond to written and oral requests for documentation, create, maintain and distribute patient charts, and practice effective use of the telephone. The importance of confidentiality and a code of ethics in a health services environment is also discussed.

Effective use of a spreadsheet program is essential to working in an office environment. This course expands on the student’s introductory level knowledge of spreadsheets. In computer labs, students perform intermediate computations using spreadsheet software to produce business documents within established deadlines.

This course is designed to help students succeed in today's workplace. Job search transition, self-advocacy, goal setting and career planning are essential components of career success. Students have the opportunity to utilize various self-assessment tools and techniques to formulate plan of action for a career in office administration demonstrated through a variety of assessments.
Effective management of information is an integral part of working in an office environment. This course familiarizes students with intermediate database operations. Students become proficient in organizing, analyzing, and presenting information. In computer labs, students perform wide-ranging tasks using database software to produce business documents within established deadlines.

Medical terminology is essential to working in a health services environment. Students learn to instinctively integrate correct medical language in the production of paper and electronic health records and documents in a health services environment.
Prerequisite(s): OFAD8
Students will efficiently and accurately transcribe error free medical documents using transcription equipment and medical transcription software. Students’ knowledge of the do’s and don’ts of medical transcription, the application of correct medical report formatting, and the correct use of medical terminology in a timed setting, are developed to enhance the effective management of a health services environment.

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with the majority of Grade 11 and 12 courses at the C, U or M level including the following prerequisites:
- Grade 12 English at the C or U level
- Grade 11 Math

Health Requirements
Pre-Placement Immunization Requirements
Immunizations are MANDATORY for this program and can take months to complete. Both International and domestic students in this program are required to complete the Immunization Communicable Disease Form to be eligible to attend placement. Without required immunizations and necessary blood work completed, students will NOT be eligible to complete placement, which can affect the ability to graduate.
Note for International students: Fees apply to most vaccines in Canada. You are encouraged to start/complete your Immunization Communicable Disease Form in your home country and bring that documentation to Canada. On arrival at SLC, the SLC Campus Health Centre can also assist you with your requirements.
Additional Immunization Requirements Students Need to Complete
In addition to the immunization requirements listed in your Program Immunization Communicable Disease Form, students attending clinical placement locations may also be asked to complete the additional vaccinations listed below and provide proof with dated receipts to the agency before they can begin placements. These are agency-specific and as such, the agency may deny a student access to their location without these completed.
- Minimally 3 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine
- Annual flu shot (when available)
Once Students Register:
Students will receive instructions on how to begin the immunization process that includes:
- Booking an appointment with the Campus Health Centre (BOOKING LINK) or an individual’s primary care physician to complete the appropriate below form and any necessary blood work
- DOMESTIC STUDENT Immunization Communicable Disease Form – read carefully
- INTERNATIONAL STUDENT Immunization Communicable Disease Form – read carefully
- Where and how to submit your information to ensure it is received safely and remains confidential, including blood work results if required
- Due dates when all information must be submitted by to be eligible for placement
Registered students are STRONGLY encouraged to complete information as soon as notified, to avoid any disruption to placement or imposed penalty fees.

Students will be working in computer labs during their regular scheduled classes. In order to attend virtual classes or complete homework outside of on-campus delivery, students will be required to have the following technical equipment at home:

Career Opportunities
Graduates from the health services stream work in a wide variety of settings (doctors’ offices, hospitals, clinics, pharmaceutical companies, and departments of government or industry maintaining health services staff).
Other Information
Programs at St. Lawrence College are delivered using a variety of instruction modes. Courses may be offered in the classroom or lab, entirely online, or in a hybrid mode which combines classroom sessions with online learning activities. Program delivery can be run weekdays, weekends or evenings. Upon registration, each full-time student is provided a St. Lawrence College email account which is used to communicate important information about program or course events.
