Overview

Take the first step towards becoming an Electrician. This first-level pre-apprenticeship program is delivered over a total of 18 weeks from May 23 to September 22, 2023.

In addition to fulfilling the requirements needed to continue in an apprenticeship (pending employer sponsorship), participants will also receive three micro-credentials and a paid placement.

This pre-apprenticeship program is funded by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) to develop more skilled tradespeople in response to Ontario’s shortage of skilled workers.

Program Highlights

In this program, participants will:

  • Focus on Level 1 in-class, as well as an introduction to secondary trade (3 hours/week) and safety
  • Develop skills and knowledge related to the installation and troubleshooting of branch circuit wiring, plugs, switches, and lighting, electrical panelboards, building electrical services, print reading, and electrical conduit systems
  • Be introduced to the Industrial Mechanic Millwright trade with an introduction to fluid power, e.g., hydraulics
  • Earn three micro-credentials in Workforce Preparedness, Digital Literacy, and Communication. Micro-Credentials are credentials that are transferable across disciplines and can be stand alone as requested by employers or stackable with other credentials to earn more comprehensive credentials

Career Opportunities

Construction and Maintenance Electricians plan, assemble, install, connect, and test electrical power distribution and control devices in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. They may design blueprints, sketches, and specifications for the installation of panel boards, switch boxes, pull boxes, and other related electrical devices and pull and connect all the associated wiring for these devices as well. They must be capable of diagnosing, troubleshooting, and providing corrective action for electrical circuits, devices, and machines.

  • Earn upwards of $63 per hour in Canada.
  • This is a Compulsory Red Seal Trade, so when your apprenticeship is completed, you will be eligible to write the Certificate of Qualification examination to qualify as an Interprovincial journeyperson. The entire apprenticeship process for this trade usually takes five years and awards the professional designation RSE for Red Seal Endorsed.
  • Read blueprints, schematics, and electrical code specifications.
  • Install, examine, replace, or repair electrical wiring, receptacles, switch boxes, conduits, feeders, lighting fixtures, Motors and Generators, and other electrical components.
  • Test electrical and electronic equipment and components.
  • Maintain, repair, install and test switchgear, transformers, switchboard meters, regulators, and reactors.
  • Maintain, repair, test and install electrical motors, generators, alternators, industrial storage batteries, and electrical control systems.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain and repair residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional electrical, and electronic control systems.
  • May install, maintain, and calibrate industrial instrumentation and related devices.
