As part of the Nursing Fundamentals course module on Indigenous Health, first-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing students participated in a meaningful cultural experience led by Shirley Chaisson, Indigenous Student Advisor.

The class began with a visit to the Waasaabiidaasamose Indigenous Centre, where students learned about its role in supporting Indigenous learners. Shirley then guided the group outdoors for a traditional smudging ceremony, offering insight into its significance in Indigenous culture.

Afterward, students returned to the classroom to explore the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, and practical ways to provide culturally safe care for Indigenous patients. This hands-on experience reinforced the importance of understanding and respecting Indigenous traditions in healthcare practice.
