Duties

The Learning Specialist assists students in the Community Integration through Cooperative Education (CICE) program to maximize learning potential. The incumbent advocates intervenes and acts on behalf of the CICE student with faculty, other College students, and College-wide services. Based on the student’s aptitude and skill assessment, the Learning Specialist is responsible for recommending modification of course outlines, tests, and assignments in collaboration with the faculty. The Learning Specialist attends classes with students and conducts tutoring sessions. This position reports to the Dean, Interdisciplinary Studies and Pathways but works under the guidance of the CICE program liaison. The incumbent champions an inclusive approach to the students’ college experience.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A minimum of a two-year diploma in a relevant field such as Developmental Service Worker, Educational Assistant, Social Service Worker or studies in Behavioural Science, Autism, Social Science.

A minimum of three years of experience working with persons with developmental disabilities/significant learning challenges. Experience in a teaching/learning environment and the proficient use of standard computer applications and assistive/adaptive technologies.

Other Required Qualifications:

    • Advanced knowledge of developmental disabilities and learning strategies to support student success required.
    • Knowledge of adult learning principles/styles required, along with the ability to work with faculty to modify curriculum and implement any necessary accommodations to meet students’ learning needs.
    • Proficiency in computer applications (Microsoft Suite, internet research, online resources, etc.).
    • Ability to use and demonstrate assistive technology and adaptive equipment.
    • Ability to modify curriculum and implement necessary accommodations to meet students’ learning needs (in consultation with faculty).
    • Excellent verbal/written communication skills.
    • Ability to analyze and solve problems collaboratively.
    • Effective time management and organizational skills.
    • Ability to provide advocacy for student concerns, promote inclusion in the classroom and college life.
    • Excellent note-taking skills and ability to provide classroom/lab support and facilitation of group work.
    • Skilled at tutoring one-one-one or in small groups.
    • Effective listening, advising and consultation skills.
    • Thorough knowledge of college programs and services.
    • Demonstrated patience and sensitivity to developmental disability issues and learning challenges.
    • Ability to work independently and as a collaborative team member.
    • Cooperative and flexible with demonstrated ability to adapt to changing circumstances, set priorities and take initiative.
    • Willingness to keep current with new assistive technologies and software.

    Physical/Work Environment Essential Requirements:

    The successful incumbent must have the ability to report to the work location or work temporarily from a remote location with reliable internet access, as approved by the College and in accordance with the college’s Telework Policy.

    Salary & Terms

      Support Group:         Pay Band H
      Hours per week:        
      Up to 24 hours/week for 14 weeks of the semester.
      Start Rate:                    $32.64/hour, plus 6% in lieu of vacation.
