POSITION SUMMARY:
The Indigenous Student Advisor plays a pivotal role in supporting and empowering Indigenous students as they make the transition to college life by engaging them in a program designed to concentrate on their learning and social needs. Through a student-centered approach, students will be provided with the opportunity to develop skills and focus related to their program of study. They will be offered opportunities for them to elevate their academic skills such as time management, personally effective study habits, exam writing strategies, finance management and self-reflections skills. As students become more familiar with the college learning environment the incumbent will consistently reach out to learners to foster their engagement and academic success. By welcoming Indigenous students to the Wassaabiidaasamose Indigenous Centre and by being available on a daily basis to guide their progress, the Indigenous Advisor will create and maintain a welcoming and positive learning and social environment. On-going social events will be arranged to foster their social integration, sense of belonging, cultural safety, and their engagement with peers and the college community.
The incumbent reports to the Director, Indigenous Initiatives and works closely with the Student Success support team as well as faculty, program coordinators and Academic Advisors within St. Lawrence College.
Education and Experience:
A minimum of a 3-year diploma/degree in Human Studies/Services (e.g., Behavioural Science or Social Services), Indigenous Studies.
A minimum of 3 years of experience working with Indigenous education leaders, First Nations, Metis, Inuit, and various urban Indigenous communities. Experience in working with education systems and processes that enable student support for learners with particular emphasis on Indigenous Students. Experience working with Indigenous education challenges, Native organizations, students at risk, school boards and community organizations. Experience working and communicating across cultures and articulating an Indigenous perspective. Experience with the design/delivery of programs and resources for Indigenous people.
Preference will be given to qualified applicants with Indigenous heritage (self-identified) and Indigenous ancestry with demonstrated community involvement and strong knowledge of Indigenous cultures, communities, customs, practices, and communication styles.

- Specialized knowledge and a solid understanding of the diverse issues associated with Indigenous learners
- Highly skilled at organizing events that address specific needs in a non-threatening and empathetic manner
- Time management, effective communication, and excellent interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of internal/external resources available to students

- Ability to develop agendas and minutes
- Familiarity with funding, provincial sponsorships
- Marketing/communications, financial and materials management skills are required along with volunteer and community coordination skills
Physical/Work Environment Essential Requirements:
The incumbent may be required to lift between 5 to 20 kg and 11 to 44 lbs. occasionally. The incumbent must have the ability to travel to attend recruitment fairs, high schools, community resource centers for presentations and meetings. The successful incumbent must have the ability to report to the work location.
