Recognition of Learning Acquired Outside the Classroom

What is the PLAR program?

At St. Lawrence College, we believe that significant learning can and does occur outside the classroom and that academic credits should be awarded for an individual’s learning without regard to where and how it was attained. The Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process at St. Lawrence College is designed to assist adult learners in identifying, describing and demonstrating past learning that may be eligible for advanced standing or course credits towards the certificate or diploma of their choice.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) credits are awarded for appropriate learning that can be demonstrated, not just from the various experiences themselves. As well, in order to be eligible for credit, the learning achieved must be appropriate to the courses offered in the program of choice at St. Lawrence College.

What PLAR is not

PLAR is separate from credit transfer. Credits transferred from post-secondary colleges or universities in full or in part with a combination of prior learning do not qualify for the PLAR program.

Who can apply?

Any adult (19 years of age or older) or any secondary school graduate who believes she/he has prior learning that can be demonstrated and that is related to the St. Lawrence College program of study of their choice may apply for PLAR. The College recognizes that adults may acquire college-level learning through employment, volunteer activities, self-directed study, travel, or other life experiences. The PLAR program recognizes military on the job training programs as prior learning.

Fees (effective September 1, 2019): Approximately $122.28 for each course application requesting PLAR credit; generally higher for work placement/clinical experience.
