What is Flexible Learning at SLC?

hyflex learning space

SLC is set to unveil two new classrooms, one in Cornwall and one in Kingston. These classrooms are the new Flexible Learning spaces that will open new opportunities for our students. Janet Greer, SLC’s Executive Director, Program & Data Innovation, explains how these new, high-tech classrooms will benefit both current and future students.

All are welcome to experience the new spaces on Wednesday, March 4, 1:30-2:30 pm Kingston campus, room number 33140 or on the Cornwall campus in room A3042. Click here for livestream link. (Will open in Teams).

What does Flexible Learning mean at SLC?

Flexible learning gives students more ways to take classes. Instead of only attending in person, students can choose to learn online (live or on their own schedule) through a mix of in-person and online, or through shorter, faster programs. Hyflex allows students to switch between attending in person or online whenever it works best for them. The goal is to make education more accessible. By removing obstacles that might stop someone from enrolling, flexible learning helps more people gain the skills needed to fill jobs that are in demand.

Why is this important for students?

Flexible learning removes barriers to education, making it possible for students to balance work, family responsibilities, finances, and long commutes. With these choices, a parent can attend an online lecture after their kids go to bed, a shift worker can watch a recorded class on their day off, and someone who lives far from campus doesn't have to choose between a long drive and missing class.

How will the Flexible Learning classrooms be used? For what programs?

The classrooms are designed to make teaching and learning easier for everyone. The rooms feature moveable desks, extensive whiteboard space, and high-quality audio and video technology so that students attending in person and those joining remotely have an equal experience. The classrooms are also built with accessibility in mind, reducing physical and participation barriers in line with AODA standards.

A standout feature is that the two campuses can be connected, allowing a single class to be taught across both locations at the same time. This opens the door to shared programs and cross-campus collaboration. These classrooms will be available for scheduling starting in the fall 2026 semester, and are best suited for courses using hyflex, hybrid, online, or cross-campus delivery.

Faculty training opportunities

These classrooms were designed to be accessible and user-friendly to faculty, but there is still a learning curve necessary to take full advantage of all that these classrooms can do. To help facilitate the use of the flexible classrooms, faculty are encouraged to reach out to JJ Bosica, jbosica@sl.on.ca, the School for Contemporary Teaching and Learning, sctl@sl.on.ca, or review the online asynchronous module on HyFlex Teaching and Learning at SLC
