National Skilled Trades and Technology Week is a perfect time to reflect on the progress we've made and the exciting future ahead at SLC. We are proud to work with passionate community supporters and sponsors who help raise awareness of SLC’s Skilled Trades and Technology programs to schools across Ontario. Supporters during 2025 include: 3M Canada, Amrize, Canarm, Ontario Power Generation (OPG), Continental Conveyor, and TC Energy.
With this support, we launched two Mobile Training Labs—state-of-the-art units that travel to schools, especially those without access to dedicated trades facilities. These labs are far reaching across the province, sparking curiosity and excitement in students at a time of great need for skilled trades professionals.
The Mobile Labs are a staple at Level Up Skilled Trades Fairs, which attract thousands of students, teachers, guidance counsellors, and parents. At these events, and during school visits, students engage in hands-on, experiential activities that open their eyes to new possibilities.
Kristin Stevens, Vice Principal at Sydenham High School (LDSB) shared:
“Shout out to the team coming in the mobile unit to events such as our SHS Car Show in the spring and Grade 9 Day. The positive interactions, information and encouragement are well received by all—especially by those who see themselves in the trades. I enjoy seeing the renewed focus of students in all grades who have positive conversations with people in the trades at SLC and with respect to pathways laid out for them early on. Keep up the outreach!”
Students are also invited to participate in a variety of campus events throughout the year. These include Girls Exploring Trades, Science and Technology, Skills Competitions, Dual Credit Programs, and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP).
Christa Ray, OYAP Recruiter and Cooperative Education Lead at ALCDSB, shared:
“For the past three years, the Algonquin & Lakeshore Catholic DSB and Limestone DSB have forged a strong partnership with SLC to promote skilled trades career pathways during the annual Girls Exploring the Trades, Sciences and Technology event. The hands-on workshops offered by SLC staff provide an opportunity for female-identifying Grade 7/8 students to come together to learn and explore in a safe, risk-free environment. This year, students were encouraged to use tools in a variety of departments including (but not limited to): hairstyling, brick & stone, carpentry, and millwright. This initiative is supported through OYAP and is always a fan favourite!”
Pat Healey, Construction Teacher at ALCDSB, offered this reflection:
“I’ve had the great pleasure of having Barry Botham as a teacher, friend, and SLC skilled trades advocate presenting to my construction classes for the past 10 years here in Kingston. These presentations are the highlight of my year. I’m a huge advocate for skilled trades and feel that the partnership our school board has with SLC is a key component to keeping new and upcoming tradespeople in our community. Without positive experiences such as Barry’s presentations, our students wouldn’t know what opportunities are available to them here in Kingston. A big thank you to Barry and SLC for providing skills training and career-building opportunities for all my students. I look forward to building this relationship even further in the next 20 years of my teaching career.”
As we look ahead, we remain committed to expanding our outreach, strengthening partnerships, and inspiring the next generation of skilled trades professionals. Thank you to everyone who continues to support this vital work.
