Students in the Business Consulting course in Cornwall are putting their project management learning into practice this semester through collaborations with community partners, including the City of Cornwall and Habitat for Humanity.

When the call for project proposals went out, the response from organizations across SDG and Ottawa was immediate and enthusiastic. Local partners were eager to tap into the fresh perspectives and problem‑solving abilities of SLC students, highlighting the strong trust and value placed on the work our learners contribute.

This hands‑on experience is giving students the opportunity to apply classroom concepts to complex, real‑world challenges—strengthening their analytical skills, creativity, and confidence while supporting community priorities.

A highlight of the semester was welcoming Tim Mills, CAO of the City of Cornwall, and Katherine Wells, Director of Communication, Government Relations & Strategic Planning, to campus on February 4. Their visit energized the class as they met with each student team, reviewed preliminary SWOT analyses, and offered thoughtful insights from their own professional journeys. Their engagement underscored the important role colleges play in fostering strong, collaborative communities.

Students are now developing innovative recommendations and practical implementation plans for both the City and Habitat for Humanity. Their work promises to bring meaningful, lasting value to these partners.

As John Dewey said, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” Our students are living this every day—learning, creating, and contributing. The future workforce is ready, and it’s taking shape right here at SLC.
