Pamela Shea, Professor in the Honours Bachelor of Behavioural Psychology program, has published an article in the Journal Behavior and Social Issues that highlights the impact of Positive Space initiatives like those at SLC.
The article, “Implementing Safe Spaces for 2SLGBTQ+ Communities: Principles Derived from a Culturo-Behavior Analysis,” explores how Positive Space programs help create environments where 2SLGBTQ+ individuals feel safe, respected, and supported.
Professor Shea explains that Positive Space is more than a visible symbol or awareness campaign. When supported by training, clear policies, and everyday affirming actions, Positive Space becomes a system that encourages inclusion, accountability, and psychological safety across an organization. These combined practices help staff and students feel more comfortable being themselves and trusting that they will be treated with dignity and respect.
The research shows that when inclusion is built into professional development, institutional expectations, and shared values, it can lead to lasting cultural change rather than one‑time compliance. This work reinforces the importance of SLC’s Positive Spaces initiative and highlights how thoughtful, organization‑wide efforts can make a meaningful difference for 2SLGBTQ+ communities. Congratulations to Professor Shea on this impactful publication.
