Story submitted by James Dupuis, Professor, Game Programming

The Capstone Project course in SLC's Game Programming program is designed to emulate a studio environment. Students create detailed design and technical documents and worked collaboratively in small teams of 4-5 learning to effectively use source control software like Git (github), set up automated build systems using Jenkins, communicate through Discord, prioritize tasks on Atlassian JIRA, and use the game engine Unity to create finished products with the goal of releasing a playable game to a publishing market by the end of the semester.

The students created their games for our capstone project, and this year we had mentors from Ottawa's Snowed In Studios meet through Microsoft Teams biweekly to provide feedback to our students on their progress, design choices, and considerations they should make as they develop the games. This gave the students a valuable understanding of the scope of their projects and what they could accomplish in 14 weeks.

This semester they also competed in a Level Up student games showcase at the start of April where they each received positive feedback. It was an exhausting process for the students, but they learned and accomplished a lot in a short period of time. They should all be proud of their accomplishments.

The results are amazing portfolio pieces for the students who will be moving on to look for jobs in the games industry.
