Placements Make Students Career Ready

students on placement

Submitted by Jarrie Burns, Manager, Student Placement

Did you know that more than 4500 SLC students went on a placement last year? Placements are one of the most important ways our students become career ready, and a key component of the experiential learning opportunities of a college education.

At SLC, placements are arranged through the Student Placement Team, comprised of a Student Placement Manager, and 10 Student Placement Facilitators (SPFs) tri-campus. SPFs act as an intermediary between students, internal staff and departments, and external agency partners. They ensure students are equipped to meet the pre-placement placement requirements of the College, agency partners, and the Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU).

Some of the placement pre-planning requirements coordinated by the SPF team include; immunizations, police checks, industry standard certifications, college and agency training, Memorandum’s of Agreement, and insurance requirements. In addition, in-class and virtual safety reviews and mini testing are provided by the SPF’s and are an important part of the student preparation. As a result, over the past seven years, less than 0.1% of students have been involved in safety incidents while attending placement.

In the 2022-23 academic year, the team supported pre-placement planning services for 67 programs, approximately 2045 local and global agency partnerships, and 4500 individual students across all campuses. In the semester following placement, each student received the Student Placement Survey to provide feedback on their experience. Over 90% of respondents were satisfied with pre-placement support services, and satisfaction with placement agencies was rated extremely high.
