Students from SLC's Environmental Technician program recently took part in the ThinkAG Career Competition, hosted by AgScape, an Ontario-based non-profit that provides factual, curriculum-linked food literacy programs for educators and students. While local high school students competed in the event, SLC’s Environmental Technician students led one of the interactive competition stations—engaging with more than 300 youth from the Cornwall area.

The SLC booth focused on environmental science and sustainability. Visiting students participated in hands-on activities and learned how Environmental Technicians work to protect the environment.
“I had a great time encouraging local youth to explore their interest in environmental science by playing a fun and engaging game,” said student volunteer Wren Gravelle. “I'd love to volunteer at more events like this!”

Many people might not realize how closely Environmental Technician careers can relate to agriculture, food production, and food security. Graduates of the program can go on to work in exciting areas like:

Indoor vertical farming: using high-tech systems to grow food in urban settings with minimal land and water.
Food production and processing: ensuring food safety, cleanliness, and quality.
Environmental protection and monitoring: assessing pollution, managing natural resources, and protecting ecosystems to ensure the environment can continue to support safe and sustainable food production.

Joana Rhea Sagpaey, another student volunteer, reflected on the impact of the day: “On a personal note, I remember being their age and having no clue what I wanted to do in the future, so I do feel like having these types of events where you have the opportunity to talk directly to employers and professionals is very helpful for young students to grow their network while learning about a program or career they might be interested in pursuing.”

By volunteering at the ThinkAG Career Competition, Environmental Technician students not only promoted their field of study - they also inspired the next generation of sustainability-minded youth.
