Walking the Talk on Sustainability: Sustainable Transportation

Sustainability at SLC

According to Natural Resources Canada, passenger transportation contributes 53% to total emissions, freight emissions are 42% of total and off-road is 5% and total transportation use has increase by 17% from 2000 to 2017. (NRcan, 2020)

Supporting and understanding how people commute to campus and the barriers keeping them from active transportation is an important part of St. Lawrence College's transition to sustainable communities.

Campus Commuter Challenge - October 2021

Week two of the Campus Commuter Challenge is underway! Don’t forget to register and log your commutes. Walk, ride, run, skate or take the bus! This week, our Sustainability Manager Brooke Gilmour committed to roller skating to work one day. What will you do? Share your actions with SLC Footprint on social media.

Cornwall Campus

Utilizing the Green Fees, the student government Cornwall Student Union installed an outdoor hydration station and bike repair station along the Waterfront Trail. The bike repair and hydration station is accessible to students, employees, and community.

Kingston Campus

The secure bike shelter is available to all staff and students. To access the secure bike shelter for the first time please email ksecurity@sl.on.ca or call extension 5555 to ask them to add access to your staff or student card. You will need to provide the first 5 digits on the back of your card when emailing or calling. The entry doors will unlock when your approved access card scanned. Employees on the Kingston campus can access the gender neutral showers if they choose active transportation. Showers will be available any time after 7:30 a.m.

Brockville Campus

Utilizing the Green Fees, the student government Student Administrative Council (SAC) installed new bike racks at the front entrance of the campus.

Supporting Electric Vehicles Tri-Campus

SLC is proud to support sustainable transportation on campus and in our communities. In 2020, SLC was awarded funding from the Zero Emissions Vehicle Program managed by Natural Resources Canada. The project includes 22 new charging stations on all three Campuses. Kingston campus will soon have ten new charging connectors and Brockville and Cornwall campuses will soon have six connectors each. The charging stations will be available to students, employees, and community members.

If you do not own an electric vehicle, please do not park in the EV charging parking spots.
