Sexual Violence Prevention Month 2023

It takes a community to end sexual violence

Written by Katie Sills, Manager, Student Rights and Responsibilities

May is Sexual Violence Prevention Month in Ontario. This month is an opportunity to raise awareness about the devastating impact of this crime, to better understand its deep cultural and historical roots, to support victims and survivors, and to work together to stop the violence.

This month also serves as an opportunity to highlight survivors, their strength and resilience. It also highlights the great work people and organizations are doing in our community to raise awareness and support those impacted by sexual and gender-based violence.

In Canada, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men will experience sexual and gender-based violence in their lifetime. Women are four times more likely to experience intimate partner violence. Indigenous women in Canada today are three times more likely than non-Indigenous women to be violently or sexually assaulted.

National, local, and campus resources are noted below. It is important to note that ending sexual and gender-based violence is a community effort – you do not need to be an expert and there is room for everyone to be involved!
