Positive Response to Accelerated PSW Program

On February 25, St. Lawrence College shared the Government of Ontario’s news regarding funding for accelerated Personal Support Worker (PSW) programs at Ontario colleges.

Since the announcement, St. Lawrence College has filled every available seat in each of the April, May, and June intakes for our accelerated PSW programs in Kingston, Brockville, and Cornwall. Each intake has spots for 24 students. In total, SLC will welcome 168 students into the accelerated PSW program. Each program intake is now waitlisted and offers of admission have been sent.

"Kudos to all faculty and staff who worked very hard to make this a smooth application process for prospective students, despite it being out of the normal cycle. The reward is that we have a number of applicants who are able to attend post-secondary for the first time as government funding has removed the financial barrier that has prevented them from considering post-secondary education in the past. Applicants have expressed their excitement regarding this life-changing educational opportunity in phone calls and emails to the recruitment team over the last couple of weeks," said Kally Portieous, Recruitment Coordinator at SLC.

Sean McDade, Associate Director of Recruitment at SLC, echoed this sentiment. "People have been very excited about being able to enter this field and the fact that we are offering it tri-campus has been very well received from community partners and applicants."

The funding for the accelerated program will cover students’ tuition and other expenses. The accelerated program allows participants to graduate with full credentials within six months. The first intake begins April 5.
