Submitted by Sheldon Beckstead Commander, Cornwall Paramedic Services
Reflecting on my 18-year journey with Cornwall SDG Paramedic Services, I am proud of the path that has brought me from a Primary Care Paramedic at the age of 19 to my current role as Commander, a position I assumed in 2025. After graduating from Paramedic at SLC in 2008, I was fortunate to begin my paramedic career immediately—an opportunity that set the foundation for a rewarding and meaningful profession.
Over the past 15 years, I have had the privilege of returning to SLC as an instructor, supporting and mentoring students as they work toward their goal of becoming paramedics. Watching students develop their skills, grow in confidence, and ultimately transition into the field has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my career.
In my current role as Commander, I work closely with the college to help facilitate student placements for their consolidation hours. This includes aligning students with experienced, like-minded paramedics who provide guidance and mentorship, helping to ensure a seamless transition from education to frontline practice.
The relationships that have been built through this collaboration are truly inspiring. We are fortunate at Cornwall SDG Paramedic Services to have SLC within our community, and together we have fostered a strong partnership that continues to support student success. This year, we welcomed 16 new recruits from the college who are now beginning their careers with our service as they complete their orientation and skills assessments.
I am proud to be part of both Cornwall SDG Paramedic Services and the St. Lawrence College family, and I remain committed to supporting the next generation of paramedics as they embark on their careers.
