Join the SLC Community in the 2023 Commuter Challenge

Cyclists ride bikes on a path

Written by Sofia Lancheros Rodriguez, Sustainability Assistant

Commuter Challenge 2023 is here! This is a nation-wide event that promotes sustainable methods of transportation and challenges commuters (staff and students) to get to work or school more sustainably. This means choosing cycling, carpooling, transit, etc. over driving solo when possible. Over the years, the SLC community has excelled in participation, in km saved, and emissions saved, so let’s beat our records this year!

Commuter Challenge will occur between June 4 and June 10. During this week, participants will prioritize sustainable methods of transportation as much as possible and log their commute all week long. You contribute to reducing emissions when you cycle, take transit, work from home, walk, carpool, skateboard, or any other non “drive alone” transportation. Register at commuterchallenge.ca with your SLC email as an individual, then add St. Lawrence College as your workplace (applies to students as well). To participate, log your sustainable transportation mode from June 4 to 10.

This year Cycling Week in Kingston coincides with the Commuter Challenge. As part of Cycling Week, and to celebrate all our commuters, please join us for a celebratory Roll-In-Breakfast on June 7 from 7:30am-9:30am for our Kingston campus. Don't forget to bring your own mug!

Notes for Cyclists

  • Remember to use safety equipment, such as a helmet, and follow road safety standards for cyclists, including signalling on page 14 and riding in traffic on page 18.
  • Make sure your bicycle is in good working order – check your Air pressure in the tires, make sure your Brakes are working, and the Chain and gears are in good condition (the ABC check).
  • Remember to bring a lock for your bike. Bike racks are located at the front entrance of each campus. SLC students and employees can access secured bike storage facilities at the Kingston campus.
  • Find more information about the Cycling Week.
