Second-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) students at St. Lawrence College recently showcased their learning at a Mini‑Symposium for their Biomedical Chemistry and Laboratory Diagnostics course. Working in teams, students created conference‑style scientific posters that connected core biochemical concepts to clinical and laboratory applications, demonstrating how foundational science informs patient care.
Hosted at the SLC Innovation Hub on the Kingston campus, the event mirrored a professional scientific conference. Upper‑year course mentors served as judges, assessing posters for scientific accuracy, clinical relevance, clarity, visual design, and oral communication, while peer evaluations encouraged collaboration and critical engagement. Best Poster awards recognized excellence in both content and presentation.
This is a challenging science course, and students worked throughout the term on this project. The symposium gave them an opportunity to demonstrate strong scientific understanding, communicate effectively, and confidently discuss their work—key skills for future nursing professionals.
The Mini‑Symposium reflects SLC’s commitment to experiential, student‑centred learning, building skills in teamwork, knowledge translation, and evidence‑based communication. Special thanks to the IT and Print Shop teams for their essential support in setting up the space and ensuring high‑quality poster production.
