St. Lawrence College Musical Theatre Presents Spring Awakening

St. Lawrence College is pleased to present Spring Awakening, performed by second and third-year students in the Musical Theatre Performance (MTP) program. The show will run Friday, April 10 to Sunday, April 12 at Gananoque’s Firehall Theatre. This production is directed and choreographed by Thomas Alderson.

Spring Awakening is a poignant coming-of-age rock musical, featuring music by Duncan Sheik with lyrics and book by Steven Sater. Inspired by Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play of the same name, the production is a captivating journey set against the backdrop of late 19th–century Germany.

The teenage characters wrestle with the challenges of growing up, including sexuality, family violence, and societal oppression. The musical’s folk-infused score, with touches of alternative rock, amplifies the emotional journey as they navigate these themes. Energetic, captivating, and haunting: a must-see for lovers of contemporary, challenging musical theatre.

“We are so proud of the work our students have been doing for Spring Awakening. This is a big challenge with difficult subject matter and a brilliant rock score, but they have more than risen to the occasion,” said Kyle Golemba, MTP professor. “Anyone who saw Peter Pan in the fall will be blown away that these are the same 19 actors. This show is not to be missed!”

Making this a true SLC production, third-year Graphic Design students partnered with the MTP program to develop the art for this year’s production, including promotional packages with a poster, social media graphics, and a postcard mailer. Students presented their concepts directly to the client and after reviewing all submissions, the winning design was selected: the work of graduating student Bianca Cindric-Myers.
