St. Lawrence College Expands Specialty Nursing Education with Three New Certificate Programs

St. Lawrence College (SLC) is expanding its portfolio of specialty nursing education offerings with the introduction of three new certificate programs designed to support registered nurses seeking advanced knowledge and specialized skills in high-demand areas of healthcare: Mental Health Nursing, Registered Nurse Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU), and Registered Nurse Perianesthesia Nursing (PACU). These flexible, online programs help nurses advance their careers while continuing to work in their communities.

The Mental Health Nursing certificate is designed to help nurses deepen their understanding of mental health promotion, assessment, and intervention strategies across a variety of healthcare settings. The program emphasizes evidence-based approaches and prepares graduates to effectively support individuals experiencing mental health challenges in diverse practice environments.

The Registered Nurse Critical Care Nursing – Neonatal Intensive Care certificate is designed for registered nurses who have prior education and/or experience in critical care and want to develop specialized competencies in neonatal intensive care. The program focuses on providing advanced knowledge and skills required to care for critically ill newborns in highly specialized healthcare environments.

The Registered Nurse Perianesthesia Nursing certificate provides specialized education in the care of patients before, during, and after anesthesia and surgical procedures. Through a comprehensive curriculum exploring pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative considerations, nurses gain a deeper understanding of the perianesthesia environment and the critical role it plays in patient outcomes.

These programs offer flexible online learning options that allow nurses to balance professional development with existing work and personal commitments. The addition of these certificates further strengthens SLC's reputation as a leader in continuing nursing education and reinforces the College's commitment to supporting healthcare professionals at every stage of their careers.

“As healthcare systems across Canada continue to evolve, there is growing demand for nurses with specialized expertise to support increasingly complex patient needs. SLC's newest nursing certificates have been developed to provide accessible, practice-focused learning opportunities that align with emerging workforce requirements and support lifelong learning for nursing professionals,” said Laralea Stalkie, Dean Health, Wellness, & Community Services and Academic Operations (Acting).

The College will be offering more specialized nursing certificates, and others, in the coming months. Watch stlawrencecollege.ca/programs to learn more.
