St. Lawrence College (SLC) has been recognized as a Top Performer in the 2025 Sustainable Campus Index, a publication that recognizes top performers in Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE’s) STARS rankings. This reporting framework for colleges and universities is used to measure and report on their sustainability performance in 13 impact areas.

This year SLC has been recognized as one the top performing institutions within the STARS reporting framework based on institution type. SLC is listed in the top performers in the Associate and Short Cycle Institutions category where 27 associate institutions were considered and eight institutions in the 2.2 reporting category were selected for overall excellence in their commitment to sustainability.

"St. Lawrence College is committed to furthering sustainability in all areas, and we take great pride in being recognized by AASHE,” said Glenn Vollebregt, SLC President and CEO. “This recognition is a result of hard work and dedication from several SLC teams, including Paulina Szlachta and the Sustainability team, and from commitment shown across our community. I want to extend my appreciation for the many ways the SLC community engages to support our efforts in the area of sustainability.”

SLC earned a spot as a Top Performer in the 2025 rankings based on its cumulative performance in six categories: Academics, Engagement, Operations, Planning and Administration, and Innovation and Leadership. SLC’s commitment to integrating sustainability in curriculums and research and to ensuring that students and staff at SLC have the opportunity to further sustainability initiatives and engage in sustainability efforts.

The college is improving its sustainability practices by reducing emissions, enhancing recycling processes, and responsibly managing the biodiversity of its outdoor spaces. SLC also integrates sustainability considerations into its decision-making by following United Nation’s Sustainability Development Goals, engaging and collaborating with its campus communities on green initiatives. SLC is proud of its work in sustainability and eager to build upon this environmental progress.

“On behalf of all of us at AASHE, I congratulate SLC for its recognition as a Top Performer in the 2025 Sustainable Campus Index,” applauded AASHE’s Executive Director, Meghan Fay Zahniser. “This achievement underscores not only your institution’s dedication to advancing sustainability, but also the resilience of higher education at a time of significant global and societal challenges. Your progress serves as inspiration for students, staff, and faculty everywhere who are working to integrate sustainability into their daily lives and professional practice. Together, the collective achievements of all STARS participants illustrate the power of higher education to drive solutions at scale and to model the leadership needed for a more sustainable future.”
