H'art Centre art display at Kingston's Skeleton Park Arts Festival

Submitted by Chris Wright, Social Service Worker Student

Through the Social Service Worker program I have been completing a placement at H’art Centre since January. H'art Centre is a non-profit, charitable organization that offers art, music, dance, and theatre programming for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as helping to address barriers to arts participation in Kingston and beyond.

Throughout the summer, “H'artists” have been exploring circus-arts inspired workshops. Kayla Todd, Visual Arts Facilitator and my supervisor, encouraged the artist-participants to imagine the most fantastical circus performance they could dream up. They created and painted beautiful circus characters on large foam panels.

H'art was invited to display these pieces at the Skeleton Park Arts Fest this past June. Throughout the project, H’artists explored their creative process, from developing their ideas to painting their artwork, while facilitators, supervisors, supporters, and volunteers provided encouragement and assistance, including weatherproofing and installing the exhibit in the park. Take a behind-the-scenes look here.
