student on placement
Keira MacNeil-Running, right, with community volunteers

Submitted by Derek Davies, Professor & Program Coordinator, Community and Justice Services Program

Keira MacNeil-Running, a second-year student in the Community and Justice Services (CJS) program, recently completed a highly successful placement with the Gananoque Police Service. Through this experience, Keira gained firsthand insight into the vital role community engagement plays in effective law enforcement.

During her placement, Keira participated in community events such as Cram-a-Cruiser, the Santa Claus Parade, and a Special Olympics curling event. Reflecting on her experience, she shared: “These experiences have allowed me to learn more about community engagement, traffic control, teamwork, and the daily responsibilities within policing. I’ve really enjoyed applying what I’ve learned in the CJS program and gaining hands-on experience that has strengthened my interest in pursuing a policing career.”

Keira’s commitment goes beyond her placement. She is an outstanding student in the CJS program, serves as a Peer Mentor, and represents her peers on the CJS Program Advisory Committee. Her dedication to learning and leadership makes her a remarkable example of student engagement at SLC. We look forward to seeing what Keira accomplishes in the winter semester and beyond!
