This semester, Digital Marketing Communications (DMC) students are engaged in a learning partnership with Extend-A-Family Kingston (EAFK) for the opportunity to support the organization’s marketing and communications efforts while developing practical experience and hands-on skills.
DMC students visited EAFK in September, where they engaged in active dialogue with Ian Cholmondeley, Program Manager about the importance of promoting EAFK as a space for personal growth, innovation, and creativity. Students also learned about many of the organization’s ongoing and seasonal activities, such as the summer club for children, after school, and Saturday programs. From these insights, students were able to outline key strategies, objectives, expectations, and the anticipated impact of the partnership.
During the visit, students also met staff and program participants and learned more about the technological tools and programs that foster personal development for EAFK participants. They explored spaces such as a virtual golf field designed for motor skill exercises, an indoor hydroponic garden where participants plant and harvest seeds later donated to community initiatives like Martha’s Table, and an outdoor recreational area that encourages interaction and social engagement.
“As students, we’re excited to apply the skills we have acquired in a real-world context that has such meaningful social impact,” said Michelle Cifuentes, a first-year DMC student. “This collaboration will allow us to gain practical experience while at the same time supporting a cause that makes a real difference in Kingston.”
Student teams will keep busy conducting market research and developing creative marketing strategies they will present to EAFK at the end of the term. The goal of this learning partnership is to apply integrated marketing strategies to promote inspiring and human-centered marketing - one that aims to support a space where everyone feels welcome, and to promote a sense of belonging for all within Kingston and surrounding communities.
