This fall marks a significant milestone for SLC as the inaugural class begins the new Bachelor of Commerce: Social Innovation program designed to prepare the next generation of innovative leaders and changemakers.
The program was developed over the last several years through the collaborative efforts of dozens of faculty members and subject matter experts who worked together to create a curriculum that responds to some of today's most pressing business and societal challenges. From climate change and sustainable economic development to addressing social inequities, students will gain the knowledge and skills needed to create meaningful impact in their communities and workplaces.
The program blends business fundamentals with emerging approaches to problem-solving, helping students develop expertise in systems thinking, design thinking, and navigating complex challenges. Graduates will be equipped to pursue opportunities across the private, public, co-operative, non-profit and government sectors, where the ability to lead change and drive innovation is increasingly valued.
“A hallmark of the degree is its strong focus on experiential learning. Throughout their studies, students will work with real community and industry partners, applying classroom concepts to real-world projects,” said Polina Buchan, Program Coordinator. “These experiences range from collaborating with external clients in coursework to completing a community-embedded capstone project that addresses authentic organizational and societal needs.”
The innovative curriculum also emphasizes digital and AI literacy, preparing students to thrive in a rapidly evolving workplace. Students will experience a variety of learning formats, including face-to-face, hybrid and online courses, providing flexibility while developing the skills needed to work effectively in diverse environments.
Supporting students along the way is a faculty team with decades of combined experience in business, technology, research and innovation. Their expertise helps ensure graduates are prepared to think critically, adapt to change and contribute to solutions that matter.
The launch of the degree program also coincides with the revival of St. Lawrence College's Enactus chapter, creating additional opportunities for students to lead social innovation initiatives and community-focused projects. Students in the program are expected to play a key leadership role in helping shape the chapter's future success.
