Positive Space Campaign Working group, reporting to the Diversity Advisory Committee (DAC), challenges the patterns of silence that continue to marginalize lesbian, gay, bisexual, gender non-conforming, and queer students, staff and faculty even in environments with anti-discriminatory and inclusive policies. It proactively creates opportunities to foster SLC community awareness and engagement and promotes inclusion of LGBTQQ2S+ persons in every area of campus life. The Positive Space Campaign exists to prevent particular negative occurrences from arising and to respond when they do occur.
SLC’s Positive Space Campaign Working Group is led by the Chair. A Co-chair will support the Chair and lead meetings in absence of Chair. Co-chair serves for term of two years.
The Chair and co-chair select members to help develop and support the campaign and to allow for an expansive and regenerative membership to contribute to its projects. The composition of the committee is representative of campus constituencies including students, staff and faculty, includes members of the LGBTQQ2S+ community and their allies, and represents a variety of skills, knowledge and experience. Committee members serve for a period of two years, typically with staggered start dates to promote continuity. Committee membership may include ad hoc members to support particular campaign initiatives.
Resources to support the campaign are approved by the Executive Director of HR through The Diversity Advisory Committee Chair. The Working Group meets, at a minimum, 4 times a year. Meetings are scheduled by the Chair and/or Co-Chair in consultation with all members. The committee will decide if it will function under any specified rules of order.
The Positive Space Campaign engages all sectors of the campus in activities and events that create a positive, diverse and inclusive community for learning, working and living. It identifies particular areas of concern, develops strategies to address them and initiates and conducts awareness projects that reflect its mandate.
The Campaign chair reports to the Diversity Advisory Committee at monthly meetings, advises of the working groups activities, provides an overview of areas of concern and recommendations for remedies of the same.
Areas of concerns and remedies will be brought to the attention of the Executive VP HR by Chair of DAC.

Positive Space Campaign - Objectives
- To challenge patterns of silence around LGBTQ issues, as well as help create a more visibly welcoming, safer and inclusive campus community for all.
- To affirm and demonstrate commitment to the idea that St. Lawrence College is enriched and enlivened by the diversity of its community, which include LGBTQQ2S+ persons
- To increase the visibility and contribute to the development of positive and supportive people and spaces for LGBTQQ2S+ students, faculty and staff at St. Lawrence campuses.
- To increase awareness, affirmation and education around sexual and gender diversity, and LGBTQQ2S+ identities
- To provide a community of Positive Space Resource persons who are knowledgeable about sexual orientation and gender identity issues and resources, and willing to support their LGBTQQ2S+ colleagues, classmates and community members.
- To provide ongoing educational sessions (Positive Space Training), information and resources to the campus community on issues related to sexual and gender diversity and LGBTQQ2S+ identities.
