Overview

This program is designed for students, who have little or no knowledge of French, to reach a level of oral expression and comprehension that enables them to converse in everyday and professional situations. Emphasis is placed on interpersonal communication. Grammar and vocabulary progress from simple sentences and words to being more complex and varied. Reading and writing are part of the program as these are fundamental language skills. Students learn through a variety of engaging and interactive activities that build confidence in communicating in French.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Express themselves orally in social and professional situations using a variety of sentence structures and vocabulary that suit the purpose.
  2. Comprehend and discuss written and spoken materials related to social and professional situations.
  3. Compose written material for a variety of intended audiences.

This course is designed for students who may not possess any knowledge ofFrench. It introduces them to French as a second language and places emphasis on interpersonal communication, while introducing the four fundamental skills: oralexpression, oral comprehension, as well as reading and writing. Students learn,through a variety of engaging and interactive activities, the fundamental principlesto give them basic communication skills. Emphasis is on basic conversationalskills such as being able to describe their family, order food in a restaurant, or saywhat their occupation is and where they work.
This course is designed for students who possess an elementary knowledge ofFrench, such as introducing yourself, expressing actions in the present tense anddescribing people and objects. The focus of the course is on interpersonalcommunication, while reinforcing and building on the four fundamental skills: oralexpression, oral comprehension, as well as reading and writing. Students learn,through a variety of engaging and interactive activities, principles to begin to refinetheir communication skills. Emphasis is on using sentences to describe everydaylife and professional life, such as going shopping, healthcare, the daily routine andwork schedule.
This course is designed for students who possess a growing knowledge of Frenchand can speak in the present, recent past and near future tenses. The focus of thecourse is on interpersonal communication, while reinforcing and building on thefour fundamental skills: oral expression, oral comprehension, as well as readingand writing. Students learn, through a variety of engaging and interactive activities,principles to continue to refine their communication skills. Emphasis is on usingsentences with more verb tenses to describe everyday and professional life, such asplanning a holiday and explaining their work tasks.
This course is designed for students who possess a deeper knowledge of Frenchand can converse using irregular verbs and past tense. The focus of the course is oninterpersonal communication, while continuing to reinforce and build on the fourfundamental skills: oral expression, oral comprehension, as well as reading andwriting. Students learn, through a variety of engaging and interactive activities,principles to further refine their communication skills. Emphasis is on usingsentences with more complexity to demonstrate conversational skills such asparticipating in debates or establishing the circumstances of an event.

Admission Requirements

To register for courses you must hold an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (O.S.S.D.) or the equivalent, or must qualify for mature student status (19 years of age or older).

New students must attend an assessment before starting a course. A quick interview with the instructor will determine which course is appropriate for you.
