COCL 100

This course provides an introduction to nomenclatures and classification systems, basic coding guidelines, the importance of data quality and the uses of coded data.  Students are introduced to the primary clinical coding systems used for hospital data in Canada: International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision, Canada (ICD-10-CA) and the Canadian Classification of Health Interventions (CCI) systems.  Folio software is used to teach the coding of diagnoses and interventions.  Students are taught how to navigate the search engines needed to find codes in the abstracting software and are shown the differences between coding classifications.  CIHI coding conventions and standards are taught in conjunction with this course to provide the student with the understanding that coding and data quality work simultaneously.
