Students test skills at competition March 2

Carpentry, Culinary Arts, Photography, and Welding, are just a few of the more than 16 skilled trades and technology events that students will compete in during the Skills Competition at St. Lawrence College, Cornwall Campus, Wednesday, March 2, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This exciting partnership between the Upper Canada District School Board, the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario, Conseils des écoles catholiques de langue francaise du centre-est, Conseils des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario, Conseils scolaires de district catholique to l’Est ontarien and St. Lawrence College continues to grow with more than 300 students and 75 judges showcasing the skills and talents applied in experiential education at the secondary level.

The focus of the competition is to provide a public forum that highlights the skills and knowledge students have gained in their particular field of interest. The annual competition is an excellent opportunity for students to demonstrate their talent and creativity putting all of their skills to the test against peers and the current industry standards. Students are given specific tasks to perform, or scenarios to complete, within a predetermined time frame that will be judged by industry specialists.

This year, the TV Video production competitors will have the opportunity to use the facilities at Dreambuilders Studios (2107 Second Street West, Cornwall). All of the remainder of the events will occur at the Cornwall Campus.

Competition winners will have the opportunity to advance to the Regional competition held at St. Lawrence College, Kingston Campus in April, and the Provincial competition in Kitchener Waterloo in May.
