Hospitality and Tourism Management, Class of 2015

Hospitality and Tourism graduate Holly Besseau-Onion

In 2015, I graduated the Hospitality and Tourism Management program at St. Lawrence College. From there, with the knowledge and hands-on learning that I received, I chose to continue my studies in Ireland at Cork Institute of Technology. The classes that are offered as part of the tourism program at SLC, gave me an advantage when continuing my studies to achieve my Bachelor of Business in Tourism.

When I was first looking at colleges, I knew this program in Ireland was available and was promoted at St. Lawrence College. The staff and my professors encouraged me to apply to school and to work hard to earn the grades I needed to in order to continue with my studies. With small class sizes in our program, our professors were able to get to know everybody , and learn what our interests were when it came time to talk about career options. Our professors were always working to bring in relevant materials to the classroom that would give us perspective on the industry; guest speakers brought enthusiasm to the classroom and offered volunteer opportunities that my classmates and I were happy to take part in for  hands-on experience.

After graduating from SLC, I began my one-year program at Cork Institute of Technology to obtain my Bachelor of Business in Tourism. Already having some knowledge of the industry, I felt prepared for my studies here. SLC gave me presentation skills, industry knowledge and confidence, which I was able to use when applying myself in my further education. The coursework  at SLC gave me a work ethic that really benefited my studies in Ireland, and hopefully my future career. The thorough program  offered at SLC gives a look into so many aspects of the industry and leaves you wanting to learn more. It opens up a world of career options, which is something that kept me excited while studying. Having classes like adventure tourism, tour operations and marketing show the wide range of jobs available to SLC graduates of this amazing program.

There were so many benefits to attending SLC,  including the small class sizes, professors that really care about your work in college and your future, the community feeling while studying, the enthusiastic environment and the willingness of all staff to help you achieve your goals at school and beyond.. With the combined skills that I have learned from both schools and programs, I will be able to have a career that I am passionate about. I am very proud to speak about SLC  the amazing tourism program.
