English as a Second Language (ESL) @ Alpha International

Available at: Alpha International Academy (Toronto)

Overview

Alpha International Academy connects international students seeking a quality post-secondary education with one of the leading colleges in Ontario. The Academy is affiliated  with St. Lawrence College, who provides oversight over all curriculum, faculty, and operational quality for college-level programs delivered at Alpha’s Toronto campus. Students can apply through Alpha at: http://slc-alpha.ca/apply-online and are considered enrolled at St. Lawrence College once admitted. Graduates receive a St. Lawrence College diploma or graduate certificate, depending on their course of study.
The purpose of the ESL program is to provide international students who speak English as a second language with instruction and support that will enable them to improve their English language skills and prepare for further academic studies.

Students will develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, and will have the ability to successfully participate and function in an English-speaking academic environment in Canada.

Students will also have the opportunity to learn about Canadian culture and the local area through meaningful experiences in the community. Students receive a total of 24 hours of instruction a week.

There are three levels – Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, and Advanced. At the Advanced level, students have the opportunity to take credit courses of their choice in consultation with an academic advisor. When students successfully complete the Advanced level with a minimum average of 60%, they receive a Statement of Achievement. With this Statement of Achievement, they meet the English language requirements for most college programs at St. Lawrence College, with no further English testing required.

The program uses Canadian materials particularly aimed at improving the English language skills of students who intend to enroll in a college diploma program. Students are offered an enriching English experience with authentic readings, audio and video segments, activities and
exercises designed to build vocabulary, text comprehension and pronunciation.

The curriculum is structured according to theme or topic-based teaching that relates to real-life topics and issues of current interest. Business English and test preparation are also included.

Final marks will be based upon completion of assignments, periodic testing, class participation, and an exit exam.

    Testimonials

At HDH/KGH we offer placement experience for some of the St. Lawrence College HIM students in our Health Information Services Department. Students work closely with confidential client information in a variety of applied ways, and learn how health statistics contribute to the management of the organization and client care. The student will get “hands-on” experience applying the classification of diseases and interventions to the actual patient charts as well as experience in release of confidential patient information applying PHIPPA, Public Hospital Act and the Mental Health Act. This partnership in education has been a mutually rewarding experience both for our organization and the HIM students.
