This course is designed to explore the compositional techniques and principles of organization in music from the late 19th century (Impressionism) through the 20th century. Students will develop the skills necessary for understanding and analyzing the structural building blocks (melodic, rhythmic, harmonic, textural, colour) and new methods of organizing principles incorporated into music of the post-Common Practice period. The analysis component of this course is designed to include the objective of providing the students with tools to link the structural composition aspects of the musical arts with those of the visual arts to promote successful integration of music and visuals based on structural elements and principles of organization.
