This course is designed to further explore the foundational elements of diatonic harmony and introduce students to the foundational elements of chromatic harmony of the common practice period (Baroque, Classical, Romantic). Students will develop the skills necessary for understanding and analyzing the structural building blocks (melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic) of tonal music and select main structural forms of the common practice period, including binary, ternary, sonata-allegro, rondo, and variations.

The analysis component of this course is designed to include the objective of providing the students with tools to link the structural composition aspects of the musical arts with those of the visual arts to promote successful integration of music and visuals based on structural elements and principles of organization.
